Most people tend to separate difficulties into two areas—psychological and
spiritual. This trend implies a clear and clean division between the human soul
and spirit. While there is a division between the soul and spirit, this division
is not so distinct. There is no inner conflict which is not psychological,
because there is never a time when your mind, emotions and will are not
involved. Similarly, there is no problem which is not spiritual. There is no
time when God is not present or when it is safe to take off the armor of God.
There is a tendency to polarize into a spiritual ministry, ignoring the
realities of the physical realm, or a psychotherapeutic ministry, ignoring the
spiritual realm. It has been said by a leading theological professor that, as
long as believers accept “a two-tiered worldview with God confined to the
supernatural and with the natural world operating for all practical purposes
according to autonomous scientific laws, Christianity will continue to be a
secularizing force in the world."
How Can We Help?
We see a large overlap in the ministries of discipleship and Biblical
counseling. Christian discipleship looks to the future to encourage spiritual
growth and maturity. Biblical counseling looks to the past to correct problems
and strengthen areas of weakness. But both ministries should start in the
present by being intensely personal, caring and loving. For each of us, our past
has shaped our present belief system and behaviors and will shape our future.
Not all of the past is good for any of us and some parts of our past—beliefs
and behaviors—may need to be dealt with in counseling.
CrossLife Ministries will help the Christian by focusing on the believer’s
walk by faith and maturity in Christ. We will look also at some of the
strategies of the world to obstruct this walk and maturity. We will deal with
foundational issues of one’s identity in Christ and outline practical steps on
how to live by faith, walk according to the Spirit, renew one’s mind, manage
one’s emotions, and resolve the emotional trauma of one’s past through faith
and forgiveness. At CrossLife Ministries we are committed to providing a balance
in our approach to counseling. We want to help a person experience healing from
the difficulties (s)he is experiencing by looking at the soul (mind, emotions
and will) and the spirit and the true identification of each.
