How To Provide Serious Injury or Death Notification

 Preparation:

bulletKnow nature, time and place of incident and full identity of victim(s)
bulletDetermine whether or not survivor(s) have medical condition
bulletAlways have access to cell phone
bulletBe prepared to provide emergency care to survivor(s)
bulletNever make notification alone

 Presentation:

bulletIntroduce yourself
bulletGain access to home
bulletDetermine family spokesperson
bulletDetermine who you are talking to
bulletDo not make notification in presence of young children
bulletHave a friend or close relative join survivor if available
bulletSit down, move close, establish eye contact, lower, warm voice
bulletGeneral – “Your --- has been involved in a serious accident.”
bulletDetails – “His car was struck by a large truck.”
bulletNotify – “Richard died as a result of his injuries.”

 Provide Support

 Normalize responses

 Prepare for the future:

bulletAsk if there is someone you can call to location
bulletSpend as much time as is needed
bulletEncourage family to be together and offer support
bulletDo not allow survivor to drive
bulletNever leave survivor alone
